Micro-Foundations of Dynamic Capabilities: The Role of Middle Managers

Abstract

This article examines how dynamic capabilities are built inside organisations by tracing the everyday practices of middle managers. A longitudinal case study in three manufacturing firms shows that strategic renewal emerges less from top-management decisions than from the experimentation and reframing practices of the middle layer.
